In reading post on other threads Im beginning to realize that I dont know if the person has had lapband or bypass done. Im having lapband done on the 30th. There is a thread for introducing yourself and not many post have been added, so Im going to try this one again. All that have had or will be having lapband done lets post just so that when we all read the post of how others are doing and questions that they may have we will know whether or not that info will be helpful to our situations. So I'll start and see how many people are out there.

Im a lapbander and will be having my surgery done on May 30 in Groveport by Dr. V.

I registered here about a month ago and couldn't make up mymind whether to have the lapband or the bypass but after talking to several people I decided the lap band is NOT for me. I am going for the bypass (roux en x) and hope they can do it laproscopically.  Best of luck to all of you.  You guys must have great discipline for the lapband!  I don't think I have.

I agree wth you Carrie.  When I first decided to have bariatric surgery, I was really leaning toward lap band, especially after I read about it in woman's world. But after speaking with people who have had the bypass and people who have had the lapband, and after listening to the Dr. in the consultation,  that really seems like some of the diets I have been on.  Not for me but would probablywork really well for someone with much more will power than I have.

Good Luck and congratulations!

Carrie and thenewme.....

Congratulations on your decisions.  I am pre op and will be having RNY.  However....just be aware that you need just as much discipline for the RNY than you do for lap band.  Granted, you can get sick from RNY if you eat the wrong food, but you can also "train" your body in order to go back to your old habits.  If you drink fluids before/during/after your meals within a certain time frame, you can allow the food to pass through quickly, which will not make you feel full and lead to grazing or over eating and can even gain the weight back.

Good luck to both of you.  We're all in this together.

Pam

Pam,

thanks for the advice and I totally agree with you.  My biggest fear is going back to my old habits.  Today, I took all the dinner ware and cups from my cabinets and shipped them off to the Goodwill. I replaced them with salad plates and 4 oz juice glasses.  My strategy is that eating from a smaller plate and drinking from a smaller cup might help with the new life style. My husband is having the surgery too and tonight we will have our first meal on the smaller plates. We are trying to get into the swing of things now, to help make a smoother transition after the surgery.

Does anyone else have any other suggestions that have worked for them?  I have found many of the tips on this site helpful and have implemented some and will implement others throughout the process.

So it seems as if most people on this board have had RNY. RNY was never a consideration for me. I know both surgeries have there pros and cons. Where you feel like you dont have the will power, I felt as if I wasnt brave enough to risk the possible complications of RNY. My sister in law is also planning on having RNY, because she feels that she doesnt have the will power, but like has been stated you still have to have will power no matter what surgery you choice. Sometimes I wonder if I made the right decision because I do get a little envious of people who have had RNY and the amount of weight they lose and how fast but in research people with the lapband lose just as much, it just takes longer and Im ok with that. It took me years of abusing my body to get in this situation so if its going to take me years to undo the abuse than thats what I will have to do.

But still I know Im not the only one that has chosen lapband, so people where you at?

I'm going to be a LAPBANDER and proud of it
I went to the seminar and it sounds like both are bad and both are good it just is up to the individual person.  I myself like the idea that I can go back to my nice easy desk job after a couple of days if all goes well.  I will still have all my insides in tack and that is a plus for me!  I have had 4 friends that have had the RNY and 2 have gained all their weight back, 1 looks ok and 1 died.  I will be the first to have lapband so we will see how it goes.  You have to make it work for you, it's just not a free pass.  When I lose weight and people ask me how I did it, my response is going to be (with a little surgery and allot of EXERCISE).

I had lap band at the end of March, and have lost over 30 pounds.  Dr. Schram and his team in Ypsilanti were absolutely fabulous through every step of the process.  I used to get migraines at least once a week - since lap-band, I have not had a single episode, not even around my period (when I was guaranteed to always have at least one).  I think the emphasis on protein, as well as the elimination of sugar, obviously has had a great impact on that aspect of my health.

I plateaued at 30 pounds lost for nearly 3 weeks - very frustrating, as I am a great rule follower.  Over Memorial Day weekend, I definitely had a "What the hell" attitude - did more snacking, had all sorts of sugary stuff (but fortunately continued with the exercise and making sure I had plenty of protein)...any other time, that would have been the end of weight loss for me, as I would see myself as, once again, being unable to control myself, and gain back everything, plus some extra.  But on Tuesday I re-dedicated myself to the program - and have lost 2 pounds in 4 days - yay!  Intellectually I know that plateaus are a normal part of weight loss, as your body systems adjust to the change - but does anyone have any ideas on how to lessen the amount of time???  I can handle the scale reading the same from one week to the next - but if it stays the same for the week after THAT, I mentally start to give up and berate myself.  I know in the past some gimmicks were drinking water with lemon slice, drinking lots of water with a meal (which we can't do!) - have you tried something that seems to give your body that "oomph" it needs to get past a drawn out plateau?  I see Dr. Schram next week for my second fill - and will talk with the nutritionist about getting past these darn plateaus as quickly and painlessly as possible.  But if anyone else has ideas in the meantime, I would love to hear them.

Hey Donna

Sorry to  hear about your friend who passed away but, did they passed away due to the surgery or something else?  I am thinking about doing the bypass myself .  So I am curious about what happen to your friend.  As far as your other friends  these surgery are tools to help you not fix the problem. So I wish you the best and like you said you must exercise...

Hello everyone,
I have been lurking for the past few months.
I had the Lap-Band in Yipsi, MI on May 1 by Dr. Poplawski. It has been 5 weeks and I have lost 15 lbs.
I choose the Lap-Band because my Mother in Law had Bypass 6 years ago and lost over 250 lbs. As of today she is gaining most of it back.
The thing I liked about the Band was when you are feeling more hungry or hungry all the time you can get fills to tighten the Band.  I have a friend that has lost 80 lbs in 6 months with the Band. She said after she got to right fill level she would have to remind herself to eat.
I live in Ohio and had my consult in Groveport OH. This is where I will be having my fills.  I get my first fill next week 6/6.  I will let you know how it goes.
Everyone is different.I hope all goes well for everyone having WLS.

I went to first group seminar with my hubby, presented by Dr. Poplawski (sp?).  We walked away both agreeing we would do lap band but never consider bypass.  Then I came for my individual consult with Dr. Custer, and he totally sold me on bypass instead of lap band, which thoroughly confused me.  My husband is very against me having bypass because he did not hear Custer's presentation and he has an uncle who died from it (although I'm sure that was many moons ago).

I have a friend who had lap band a year ago and has lost 100 pounds.  She swears by it.  After reading some of the other online messages, I've decided to stick with lap band for myself too.  Bypass is just too much surgery for me, and everyone seems to know someone who died from it.  I have a 3-yr-old.  I just want to get healthy so I can do more things with her.

I go for my psychiatric eval 6-18, but think I might try to get in earlier now.  I want to get on with this ASAP!

Welcome Bigred. I choice lapband also for the same reasons and like you never even considered gastric bypass. I want to lose the weight but not willing to take those chances. Your last line about how did you let yourself get here and that you dont believe it until you see a picture is so true. I brought my son a digital camera for xmas and seen a picture of myself and just couldnt believe it. I mean I had been thinking of doing the lapband before that but once I seen the picture I knew I had to follow thru with it. Im 5 days out and feeling ok. I think if I had done gastric I would still be laying in the bed somewhere instead of being up typing on this computer. Good Luck

Hi Violeteyes!

I'm rooting for you, so keep me informed on how you do.  At 5 days out, would you be able to walk around an amusement park?  I'm considering having this surgery hopefuly in July when I'm on vacation, but we want to take my 3-yr-old to Cedar Point.  I'm not telling anyone except hubby, mom and sis that I'm doing this.  When folks at work ask how I'm losing, I'll just reply "Eat less than I used to."  As much as I dread pictures, I do want to take several "before" photos just so I can remember how miserable and unattractive I am.

To answer your question. No way Im 6 days out and Im walking like I just gave birth. I keep thinking that maybe its just me and that Im babying myself so I try to speed up or go up and down the stairs faster but all that leads to is feeling like crap shortly after. But like we all no everybody is different. If all else fails you could get a wheel chair. That may sound silly but it would be better than missing an special event.
