The March On Track with Barix Newsletter topic is “Closest to Nature.” Deb Hart discusses the benefits of eating foods that are as close as possible to the way they are in nature. She quotes the author of In Defense of Food, who suggests that people should: - Choose mostly foods that have fewer than 5 ingredients
- Not consume anything with high fructose corn syrup
- Shop the perimeter of the grocery aisles
- Purchase foods from a local farmer’s market or co-op when possible.
So I pose the question: Where do you shop to get foods that are “Closest to Nature?” And what is your favorite “Closest to Nature” food they carry? Help your Barix Family by letting us know where you like to shop and what city and state that location is in. You may know of a place in their area that will help them get close to nature. __________________ Sincerely,

Reply with quote | #2 | My Husband and I love Trader Joe's. They use local farms for their produce and all Trader Joe private label products contain NO artificial flavors, colors or preservatives; NO MSG; and NO added Trans Fats.
Our favorites are the frozen french toast, the many different pizzas, their wide selections of coffee, sweet and sour chicken, and wide variety of fresh and frozen vegetables.
They have locations in the following areas (only listing the areas closest to a Barix Clinics location):
Baltimore, Maryland Cincinnati, Ohio Cleveland, Ohio Columbus, Ohio Dayton, Ohio Greater DC Area Greater Detroit Area, Michigan Marlton, New Jersey (not sure if that's a big area, I'm in MI) Northern New Jersey Greater Philadelphia Area, Pennsylvania To find a location near you go to http://www.traderjoes.com/locations.asp __________________ Sincerely,

Reply with quote | #3 | I love Trader Joe's too because most stuff is a healthier version of the grocery store options.
I'm a fresh fruit and veggie gal all the way! They satisfy me everytime. We have been on a fruit tasting kick for awhile now. We buy several different kinds of apples and cut them up and then compare the tastes. They all taste so differently yet I bet most of you grab the old standard you were brought up on. We also compare grapes. Grapes are another one of those things that have distinct differences in taste.
Also, I love edamame...soy beans. They serve them in Japanese/sushi restaurants. Soy is protein! We boil them for about 5 minutes, drain and put Kosher salt on them. We prefer them warm but are also delicious cold as snacks or in salads. Instead of salt, I've also had them with cajun spices sprinkled on them after they are cooked. I suggest experimenting with whatever spice blend you prefer. Or do salt....AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!

Where do you get the edamame: by this I mean in fruits and veggies, frozen section. I have had the roasted soya nuts but I think you are talking about unroasted right? __________________ PATs September 30,08

They are in the frozen food section and are usually in a bright green bag. Trader Joes and Whole Foods has them but if you go to a regular grocery store, I'm going to guess they are in the frozen veg dept but in some stores there is an international frozen food section and I've found them there too. Also, if you have an Asian market or international market in your area, they will for sure have them. You can get them still in the pods or already shelled. I like the ones in the pod because I like the ritual of popping them out of the shells. (They look like big oversized peapods in case you've never seen them) If you buy them already shelled, it is easy to eat too many...kind of like sunflower seeds. If you can grab handfuls and shove them in your mouth, you eat way more and it isn't as fun.
If you've never had them and decide to try them, please post for others. I LOVE them! __________________ Jenise

Reply with quote | #7 | Okay, I found them and tried them, and I really enjoyed it! I would like to try seasoning it with something though, but not sure what. Edamame will definitely be a part of our regular diet now!
Thanks jenise!

Reply with quote | #8 | Chrissy So glad you enjoyed them! Soy is a wonderful food and has so many forms.
I boil them and then sprinkle them with Kosher salt. I've had them with Cajun spices sprinkled on them after they are boiled before too. I think you can sprinkle whatever spices or herbs on them that you like. If you come up with a good combination, please post it for us. A good idea goes a long way!!!
At our local Asian Grocery Store, I recently found a crumbled seaweed (sushi wrap), salt and sesame seed mixture that comes in a shaker bottle and I'm going to try that. I'll let you know how it tastes.

Reply with quote | #9 | I am struggling about fresh fruits/veggies--or at least when I think about ever having them again. How will I fit those in? I really would like to have some squash from my freezer (I pureed it already) along with my meat but by the time I eat my meat, I have no room left..................for the squash or for salad when I can eat salad, etc.
I'm beginning to think that the only way to get variety is going to be one item per meal and sometimes a meal may consist of a fruit or a veggie but probably not together.
How do some of you have meat (protein) and a veggie or salad or fruit in the same meal? I keep remembering at PATs being shown that plate of food with the protein, the veggie and then a starch........and thinking the size of that piece of meat would be all I could possibly eat--never getting to the veggie let alone the starch (which I know would be best to leave alone anyway).
Sounds like I am going to be hitting the market again for Edamame but probably can't have it until I am on regular foods, right?

Reply with quote | #10 | Susan The further out you get, the easier it gets to get the protein in. Finding protein fortified foods helps too because every little bit adds it up faster. Also, the further out you get, the more food your stomach will hold so eating your protein and a veggie is not impossible, in fact, it is what you will be doing. Right now, you are swollen and healing. I eat a small normal meal now though I choose to not include simple carbs or starches. I can put a salad-plate-sized meal away without any problems. Try not to look so far down the road. If you want some of that squash, make a soup and use some milk (protein) to make it creamy or add a little bit of that unflavored Any Whey and it will instantly be full of protein!!! Remember, 2 or 3 bites at a time and then in a couple of hours, do it again. Your body will heal and once you are eating more normally, you will be full and not thinking about eating again for a few hours but right now, chip away at your protein and fluid goals a little at a time, bite by bite, sip by sip, until you reach your goals.
It WILL all work out. Try not to worry or stress about it. How would we all be here if it didn't work out...right? Unfortunately, everyone has to weather each stage before you get to the FREEDOM stage!! Your time is coming!!!!! I am sorry for you that you had to have the extra delay, it must be really frustrating. __________________ Jenise

Reply with quote | #11 | Hi Jessica, I wasn't sure where to post this and since I can't start a new thread in any of these "administrative" forums, I decided to just post here.
When I receive the daily update via e-mail to the threads that I am subscribed to, there is now only a link at the top of the e-mail which takes me to the "New Posts" search results. Below, where the threads are listed individually, there is a URL listed but no link on which to click. I realize this good be an e-mail client issue, etc. and not on your end and/or not on the provider of the message board/software end. But, I'm sure I used to be able to click on those to go directly to that thread. Could this possibly be fixed?
The "Started by" line in that message, regarding each thread, no longer indicates who started the thread either.
While I am at it, in the New Posts window, it would be really great if it said WHEN the thread started AND if I have posted in it and when. Also, if I hit F5 on my keyboard to refresh that New Posts window, it takes me to the generic Search window and then I have to click on New Posts again. This I can deal with but it didn't used to be that way.
Thanks for this message board. It is so very important. Another truly class act of Barix Clinics!
