Hi everyone!

I'm new to the boards here

I just got my OHIP approval this week and my dates scheduled for the RNY surgery with Dr. Poplawski in Michigan!!!! I am sooo very excited. OHIP wasn't the funnest experience, requesting more and then more information from my GP. Finally.... So I'm just looking for some feedback from people who have had the RNY Surgery and what to change before having it. For example - how much weight should I lose (Is it person specific), working out, walking, etc would help??

Is anyone else near London, ON who has had the surgery???

Thanks everyone
Chan

You need to absolutely ROCK YOUR SURGERY
which means avoiding "pointless foods" such as cookies, candies, cakes, 100 calorie pack for as long as you can. People find they do much better avoiding them rather than setting off a "trigger". Lose as much weight as you can the first year and then worry about treating yourself more often once the weight is gone. Get the weight off first.

Start walking now.  Exercise every day if you want to maximize the tool you've been given. You'll need a way to maintain your loss after the surgery is not forgiving any longer.

Have you been to your local support group yet?

Dawn

No I have not gone to the Support Group yet.

I just found out there was one actually (through this site) in London the second Tuesday of each month.

I'm just so nervous for the next two months preparing myself for the surgery.

I'm happy Dr. Poplawski was booking into January which gives me some time to start exercising more and watching what I eat

Thanks for the advice!

I'm thrilled!!!!

Congrats on your upcoming surgery and welcome to the boards.  Everyone is different in the amount of weight they lose and the time it takes to do so.  Good luck...

Congratulations and welcome! You are going to love your RNY. My best advice is to do exactly what the Doc and NUT tell you, stay on the boards for support and ask as many questions as you have. You will get into the habit of reading labels and being very aware of what you eat. In addition to walking you should find other ways to exercise that you enjoy, so it will become a lifetime habit. This is an amazing journey and you are going to love it!! I am 9 months out, slightly more than 3/4 of my way to goal, OFF of 8 prescriptions and FEELING GREAT!! This has been a wonderful experience!
All the best!
Gail

The tool they give you needs to be worked only by YOU, follow everything they tell you 110% it will work.

They have a great support system so any issue come up call them they will help.

I agree get all the weight off first within the first year and crush all the bad habits right from the start.

It is very much a life changing thing you go through, so expect some emotional highs and lows.

I lost 195 pounds in 10 months and sit at 175 pounds from 370 pounds. It has been 2 years today.

I am from Kitchener Ontario

Steve

Congratulations!  I know how difficult waiting on OHIP can be but trust me the wait is so worth it!!  I am going on 3 months out from surgery and have no regrets, this was one of the best things I ever did for myself.
I agree with the others who say to start watching what you eat now and to start exercising also.  I love my daily walks and find it gives me a boost to feeling good.  I am attempting to jog a bit on my walks now with the goal to be able to go out for a run with my eighteen year old son.  I am off to Ypsilanti on the 15 for my 3 month follow up and then will follow up in the spring.  The four hour drive is too long to make in the winter weather.  Wish you all the best and keep us posted along your journey.

I'm in london.  Having PATS Dec 2 and Surgery Dec 16.  I attended the support group the other night and it was good talking to some people who had had the surgery, and to hear their experiences.  See if you can make it to the Dec meeting, you will probably find it helpful.
