My sister and I will be having surgery the same day - Nov. 25/09. Our PATS day is Nov. 16th (in Ypsilanti).  We found out on Thurs. Nov. 29.  I had my OHIP approval, and we were just waiting on my sisters.  Things have come together beautifully - just as if it was meant to be.  Lots of work ahead.  I am ready for the challenge!  Good luck to all ofyou!   Terri

Thank you!  I am now wondering if the next 3 weeks will fly by or drag on.  Trying to focus on eating well, to drop as much as I can before the big day!

Hi Terri,

In my case it's been dragging on, but everyone keeps telling me it'll be here before you know it LOL  My surgery is December 10th.  Yesterday couldn't have been soon enough   I guess we just have to stay busy and the time will go.  I'm trying to lose the weight too before the big day.  So far I've lost 5 lbs, so I feel good about that.  Have you had any luck?  tina

Terri, It's awesome that you and your sister will be doing this together.  I think that kind of mutual support will be great for you two.  Plus you can compare notes on how you are feeling each day.  I remember the first day or two and how it would have been cool to talk to someone who could relate to how I felt at that very minute.  Keep us posted on how you two or doing.  Hugs, Sue

Thanks everyone!  I am really glad it worked out that we could both go through this together.  Hey Megan  - how was PATS on the 4th?
For those who have had surgery - do most people stay a night or two in a hotel after surgery?  We weren't planning to - and have a four hour drive home.  I recently heard that it is suggested.  And what about needing a family member there the whole time?  My brother in law will be there, and of course my sister. It seems kind of silly to have my boyfriend there when my brother in law will drive us home.  My boyfriend would have to make arrangements for his son etc.  which he is more than willing - but I'm not sure I need him there.  My Mom will be home looking after our kids.  Any thoughts?

I wish, I had stayed one night the day I left the hospital, I only had a 2 hour drive. Why You ask?

1. I got to leave the hospital at 2 pm and I was very tired. You know, getting up every couple of hours all night to walk, have your stat taken.

2. Having to stop and walk for 10 minutes on the ride home made our ride longer.

I wish I had stayed, got a good night sleep and then left first thing in the morning, rested and ready for the trip.

My surgery was on a Wednesday a.m. and Dr. Custer released me on Friday.  We live 4 hours away and drove back home.  We had the 'hotel'  on standby just in case Dr. Custer felt I needed to stay an extra night but my surgery was pretty textbook so I went home.  We stopped every hour like clockwork, so that I could walk.  That was a relief because gas builds up and it feels so good to walk. Plus to avoid blood clots they recommended walking frequently.  For the most part I slept all the way home.  When I got home I parked myself on the big recliner and got up every 15-20 minutes to stretch and walk.  Rick (my husband) took care of me and was with me all day for the next 3 days.  When he went back to work all I had to do was call him or my neighbor or daughter to come by.  Everyone lives close by. I even slept on the recliner because I couldn't stretch out flat on the bed yet.  It hurt too much.  Hope this helps.  You will be find.  Hugs, Sue

Hey Terri!  PATS went great!  It was an easy day .  They did bloodwork, EKG, chest x ray, ultrasound (if you still have your gall bladder), respiratory test, and then you see a doctor (it was another doctor...not my surgeon).  After all that, I went thru nutrition class and that was it!  The whole day took about 2 1/2 hours or so...I had to wait a bit before going back for my bloodwork.  Once they take you back, though, it goes so quickly!

Good luck on the 16th!

Hi Terri, just want to wish you and your sister the best. I didn't notice, but what kind of surgery are you having rny patience seem to stay a day or 2 and lap banders usually go home that day. I had lap band and was very happy to go home that day. If your brother-in-law is going to be there and drive you guys home I don't think your boyfriend would have to be there unless you want him there for support. Keep us posted on how you are doing.

Congratulations!  Dr. Nunn releases you the day after surgery barring any complications. I had a 4 hour drive home and it was rough. I recommend taking GasX and getting your pain meds filled before you leave.

As for your boyfriend being there ... I think Barix just wants someone there to drive you back home.

Best of luck! Let us know how it goes!!!
