Reply with quote | #1 | Glad to have met CJ - it looks like you and I are in the same boat for Christmas. I as well have taken the advise of shopping a bit now. Started this past weekend. I am planning to avoid most social things since office party etc will actually be in the first 2 weeks of Dec and I really dont know if I will be up to much the first 2 weeks so I am trying really hard not to put pressure on myself. Basically I have told everyone if I feel like it you will see me if not you wont. I work for the base hospital at Trenton airbase for the military and my husband is military - not me civilian public servant all the way... My husband is home from Afganestan so I thought it would be a good time to finally get this done. Especially since he may be going back next spring or summer. I look forward to wandering the halls with CJ = is therre anyone else who will be joining us??? My surg is Dec 2 and my husband is coming to stay in a local hotel and drive me home. The kids are staying here in Canada with Gramma and Grampa. Dr Taylor said he suggests I stay 1 or 2 nights in a hotel after release from the hospital but I guess it will depend on how everything went and how I am feeling. We have been looking into reasonable accomodations for him and the cheapest seems to be the Harmony House Motel but the reviews are not so good -a little scarry actually. Prostitutes give a big thumbs up and some I read said it was a quite place to "smoke some" We checked online for the Parish Inn Bed and Breakfast - it is only a half mile from the clinic and it has special rates for Barix patients - 89 for both of us and 79 when he is there himself. When I go down for my PATS we have to bring the kids so we are going to try the Days Inn in Ann Arbour. We tried the comfort in in Belleville when we came down for my consult clean enough but the beds like concrete slabs...ouch Anyone know of cheap decent accomodations? Thanks again to all for the support it really does help with the nerves. Cheers LesleyV __________________

Reply with quote | #2 | Hi Lesley,I would recommend that your husband stay at the Red Roof Inn in Belleville. If you tell them you are a Barix patient you get a discount. The rate is about $44 per night. There are restaurants, shopping and pharmacies all close by (Dimitri's diner has great food). I was told by staff at Barix that the neighbourhood surrounding the hospital is dangerous, so I wouldn't stay anywhere near there. Belleville is about a 10-15 minute drive from the hospital, but it is worth it. Good luck! Cara __________________ OHIP papers faxed August 11/09

Reply with quote | #3 | Lesley...I live about 5 minutes from Barix (the other direction!) and know right where that Harmony House motel is. DO NOT stay there Just driving by at night makes me a tad nervous, so I would def not recommend it!!! Red Roof Inn in Belleville would be an awesome pick, I agree. For your hubby, right in that vicinity is Cracker Barrel, McD's, Taco Bell, Applebee's, Big Boy, Tim Horton's for restaurants. For shopping there is Meijers, Wal-Mart, CVS drugstore, Walgreen's. I believe there's also a Holiday Inn Express maybe 1-2 minutes down the road from Red Roof that looks nice also. Either way would be a great pick in my opinion, maybe 10 minutes from Barix and Belleville is a nice city. Good luck!!!! __________________

I see the local gals gave you some good advice but I wanted to throw one more thing in there for you. My insurance company (Aetna) covers a portion of the travel expense and hotel stay. You may want to check with your insurance company and see if that is available to you as well. When I had both my Abdominoplasty and Breast reductions in the last 6 weeks or so.. we stayed at the Red Roof Inn near the University in Ann Arbor it was the best hotel for the money I have seen in a long long time.. Its right across the road from Bennigans.. there is a Burger King, a mall and other food eateries as well.. its about 5 miles from Barix.. |

Reply with quote | #7 | Hey Lesley, Looks like people in the know have weighed in already on the topic of accommodation. When I went for my consult I stayed at the Red Roof in Belleville and I was delightfully surprised. I selected it because it was reasonable and it was only me staying there for a few hours but I'll stay there again when I go for my PATs at the end of this month. Sunday nights are $39 and I didn't know Barix patients got a rate so I'll call and ask about that too. The place was nothing fancy but it was clean enough and convenient to the hospital. Since we are OHIP patients we don't qualify for any subsidies on our accommodations any longer. You might have better coverage through the government since your husband is in the armed forces. Not sure about that one. I'm finding it difficult to concentrate at work because this surgery is all I am thinking about! Cindy
PS. I saw that review of the Harmony House on line as well and I didn't know if it was a joke or not! scary. __________________ Cindy M. |

Reply with quote | #8 | I like the MicroTel Inn on Plymouth Road....it's a little more $ but it is more spacious than the Red Roof Inn and has free long distance and free wireless internet, unlike Red Roof Inn at this price. It's about 20 minutes away but right on and off the expressway. Big Boy is close by and the Holiday Inn next door has a reasonable restaurant within its building, which is open for breakfast too. Plus the MicroTel has a continental breakfast (of the usual carbs sort of variety).
Off season, you can get the Holiday Inn there or the Marriott right in Ypsi for $49 or maybe a little more now by indicating four star hotel in either Ann Arbor or Ypsilanti on Priceline.com and bidding your own price. That is fun to get that nice of a hotel for such a low price! Holiday Inn has in room free wireless internet access; the Marriott does not. Go figure.
We have stayed at the Red Roof Inn (Belleville), Lamp Post Inn (Ypsi--stay clear of this place), Holiday Inn--Plymouth Road and MicroTel Inn--Plymouth Road and we now always stay at the MicroTel because we like it and know it and we are also in the frequent stayers club which is now Wyndham related and we can get free nights. That's added up over the extra nights we have stayed through extra surgeries and extra follow-up visits and problematic visits. My son also stayed at the Marriott in Ypsi and loved it but this was for my second surgery which was emergency surgery that day of my doctor visit and he was alone with me and I needed him to stay closeby since he is nearly autistic and he was very nervous driving alone in the big city, etc.
ALWAYS ask at any of the places for a hospital discount, even if it is to come for a follow-up visit appointment--they all have a hospital discount I have found so far. There are so many hospitals in the area, they almost have to do that to be competitive. Three weeks after my son's stay at the Marriott, I called and got a partial refund because he didn't ask for a hospital discount and I explained the situation and they gave me a credit on my credit card of over $50! Doesn't hurt to ask! I think the hospital discount rate there is $98 or it was earlier in this year and the normal nightly rate for that room was about $150. Quite a difference for a very nice hotel, except that the only internet access was in the lobby. Strange for a top notch hotel. Oh well.

Not sure how much my mom is paying, but she is staying at the Ypsi Marriot. It's very close (within about 3 miles) from the hospital and it looks very safe (she was worried about going there by herself at night, but it's all good...well lit and very nice). __________________ Megan

Reply with quote | #10 | On our last visit we stayed at the Red Roof Inn in Belleville for 66.29 all taxes included. Room was nice and comfortable. All I require is a clean room with a comfy bed with TV and internet connection. Good luck

Reply with quote | #11 | The Red Roof Inn in Belleville is not bad and close to lots of food choices for your hubby. Call the hotel directly and ask to speak to the manager to get the rate for Barix patients. You can also go onto Priceline.com and name your own price. Pick Ypsilanti and 3 stars or better. You should get the Marriot at Eagle Crest for about $50.00 per night. I have heard it is a great place to stay.
