Okay everyone, I'm on the brink.  I've been off of regular coffee for months now and have done well with decaf.  BUT I MISS REGULAR COFFEE!  Remind me again why I shouldn't drink regular coffee..........  And if any of you went back to regular did you have any problems?  Hugs, Sue

I have been drinking regular coffee since two weeks after surgery!  I haven't had any problems what so ever.  They say that regular can increase your metabolism- which can make you hungry...but I haven't noticed that.  It can also dehydrate you - so I just make sure I get a few extra glasses of water to compensate.  I had to go rouge on one rule!!! lol

By the way...I had lap-band, don't know if that could make a difference?

I'm still pre-surgery, however I have a friend who had RNY done a number of years ago and she's drinks regular coffee...so I guess it depends on how you react to it.  I'd say try it for a few days and note any changes (or lack of changes) in your journal (if you keep one)...see how that goes.  Hope this helps!  Good luck!

Thanks for your reply Megan.  I still haven't tried it and I'm not sure that I will but I sure am thinkin about it.    I don't want to mess up a good thing and I haven't cheated on anything at all so far. Your friend had her RNY a few years ago?  I'm only 5 weeks out.  Might make a difference.

Arlen, Splenda is definatley my best friend.  I'm not keen on the hazelnut flavor tho.  I'm pretty nervous about trying it too but that's why I wanted to know if anyone else had gone back to it and how early.  Hugs, Sue

I drink regular coffee, and have been since about the end of December of last year (3 months post RNY).

Caffeine is a diuretic and appetite stimulant, that is why it is suggested to be avoided right after. For every ounce of caffeinated beverage consumed, you should add an additional 2 ounces of non-caffeinated fluids.  If caffeine stimulates your appetite, you will just be tempted to eat more or more often than suggested.

Regular coffee does not have the appetite stimulant impact on me, in fact, it is just the opposite. I will have a cup of coffee in the morning and I don't feel hungry until lunch or later.  That is why I drink my protein shake first and then the coffee when I get to work.

Why not have a cup? It's really no big deal. If you read a lot of literature on the subject, the caffeine issue is not that big a deal as they say it is (unless you are one to react to caffeine itself).

I think they tend to want limit so the people don't drink all their calories.

Common sense is all.
